For my money, these works are better than anything Auric did in his homeland, with or without Cocteau. This collection has been assembled with uncommon care and resourcefulness; it is difficult to speak of high points because each score holds special joys. Caesar is majestic, The Innocents spooky and unsettling. The Titfield Thunderbolt is Anglophile nostalgia at its best, and the jaunty romp that is the Overture for Hue and Cry shows itself to be a masterly miniature, a slice of British Light Music that Haydon Wood or Robert Farnon could be proud of. Rumon Gamba and the BBC Philharmonic perform brilliantly, as do the Chandos engineers. I want more."
